CONGRATS!

A big congratulations to Erik & Karen Ostergaard, Wanda Burnette, Rebecca Mayernick, & Bart Smith for their outstanding performances this year on the Asheville Track Clubs Grand Prix Circuit.

Erik & Karen won the overall Grand Prix. Wanda was 2nd, & Rebecca 3rd overall. Bart won the master's division & smoked the Jingle Bell 5k Run in 17:49 as a 64 year old. We have no excuses thanks to Bart!

Also, congrats to Foot Rx Team Member Loic LaForet for his 4th place finish at the Kiawah Island 1/2 Marathon.

We're proud of every one!

Southside Track Workouts Update

We've been trying to find a venue for a South-Side track workout night, but have been unsuccessful thus far as local High Schools have too busy a schedule for us to be permitted on their tracks on a consistent basis.

We will keep trying. Our next efforts will be to ask the Middle Schools in the area, but these tracks are mostly paved surfaces. We'll see what we can do.

If any one has another idea, feel free to e-mail aaron@footrx.com

Due to the weather outside, the Blackjack Run/Trail Run scheduled for Dec. 19th at Jackson park has been canceled. We will try to reschedule the event.

Great showing for Foot Rx at Black & Blue Trail Race

Even though there were cold temps this morning, the Black & Blue Classic had a great turn out this morning. It was great to see so many faces I know. Every one I talked to had a great time and enjoyed the course at the South Cliffs Private Community. Great job to Greg Duff, Glory Hound Events, & Setup Events on a great race. The Black course (6.5 miles) was Hard & FUN! The race climbs for just over 3 miles & then comes down for the rest. The Blue course (suppose to be 2.8, but thanks to my wife who mislead ALL the runners, it was probably closer to 3). Beth Saft ended up winning the Blue race bringing home an Adirondack Table. Awesome job to her.

In the Black race, I (Aaron Saft) won the men's race & brought home the Saft household another table, Mark Lundblad 2nd, Victor McHenry 3rd, Jerad Crave 4th, & Jay Curwen 5th. Jay's wife Monica won the females Black race. Official results will be posted at www.gloryhoundevents.com

Congrats to All who finished Dennis Duffy, Frank C., Donald (Enka HS Coach), Lloyd (Mr. Amazing), Rick Baker, Ms. Martha, Canadian Andrea (spelling?), Gary, Mrs. Mielke, Bob, Mike Tinsley, Nicole, & 2 x Keith (nice to meet you both!). Gosh I'm sorry if I missed any one!

Great to meet some new faces!

All abilities are welcome!

Turn right at the stoplight onto Bent Creek Ranch Road, following the brown signs to the Lake Powhatan Recreation Area (bear left at fork after 0.2 mi on this road). The paved, signed Hardtimes trailhead parking area is just over 2 miles down this road on the left.

Sports Bra fitting

We've now been trained to help size & fit sports bras. Ask for Erin or Monica when you come in.

We've started to carry CW-X bras. These are very supportive & comfortable.

An interesting fact about sports bras is that you should replace your sports bra every time you replace your running shoes. Just as your shoes wear out, so does the support of your sports bra. Try a new bra on and feel the difference in support. Sports Bras last 6-9 months when used constantly. These should never be washed in warm water or put in the dryer. Sports wash can be used to thoroughly clean your bras.

Please let us know if there is a bra that you wished we carried.

Cold weather gear is filtering in!

We've started to receive our cold weather gear. Light jackets, long sleeve shirts, pants, & tights have been coming in.

Apparel for night time running is also now available. We've got lots of different styles to check out.

Compression socks & tights are in & arriving daily. Come check this stuff out! Ask some one in the store about the advantages of wearing this gear!

9-12 - Blue Ridge Relay Experience

This passed weekend, Jerad Crave & Aaron Saft competed on the Mizuno Team in the Blue Ridge Relay. Aaron ran legs 2, 14, & 26. A total of 24.5 miles over the two-day race. Jerad ran legs 4,16, & 28 for a total of 18.2 miles. Our team was comprised of runners from all over the South. Including runners from Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, North Carolina, & Virginia. These were Mizuno Employees and retail stores who sell Mizuno. A great bunch of gentlemen. We had a great time racing Norm's Maggots. The Maggots & our Mizuno team went back & forth, but had a great time cheering each other on along the way. Wrong turns were taken & mistakes were made by both teams. In the end, The Maggots triumphed. Our hats off to a hard fought race!

More importantly, congrats to Scott Hayward. He finished all 211 miles in about 57 hours BY HIMSELF! Amazing!

Send Aaron your stories from the Relay or the Asheville 1/2, so we can share them on the blog! aaron@footrx.com

Cross Country Grand Prix Race #2

Grand Prix XC Race #2 was run under ideal conditions... cloudy skies & rain. The temperature dropped at least ten degrees for the start of the race. The turnout in the number of entrants was spectacular. We had 46 runners finish the 2 mile course, 13 of which were from the Carolina Day Boys & Girls Cross Country Teams.
Through the mud & puddles, Aaron Saft won the Men's race in 10:16 & his wife, Beth Saft, won the Feamle's race in 12:49. Rounding out the top three men were Tim Murray (11:20) & Trevor Sleight (11:24). Second in the women's race was Hannah Goss (15:04) & Chandler Tinsley (15:15).
Seventy-two year old Ben Eaton was the talk of the race finishing (running the entire race) in 25:38! I'm posting the overall results below.
Congrats & thank you to all who attended!

Nimbus & Cumulus Mania!

No, I ain't talking about clouds (although I am an avid cloud-watcher).

I think I see a bear, or a race car... no its Scott doing a yoga pose!

I am talking about the brand spanking new versions of Asics's wildly popular running shoes, the Nimbus 11 and the Cumulus 11. The delivery just arrived this past week and they've been selling like hot cakes. We are one of the only stores in the area to get them this early, so unless you want to wait until June (way too long), come grab yourself a pair (please pay for them before you leave!).

Both of these neutral shoes offer a great bang for your buck in terms of cushioning. The Cumulus has consistently been a great competitor to comparable models from other brands in the neutral category and the Nimbus has been the Rolls Royce of soft cushioned goodness for years. You gotta feel them for yourself. Come on down to the store, take in that new shoe smell (always perferrable to old shoe smell) and try on these brand new models.

Reminder!

Trail Night @ Foot Rx Asheville - Tomorrow!

Shiloh reppin' the good ol' USA @ World Mountain Champs

With Mark & Anne Lundblad, Aaron Saft and Shiloh Mielke leading the forum, this is a great opportunity to ask some questions, get some info and hear some great stories of racing and training on trails and mountains in WNC, North America, and all across the world!

... and don't forget - we are holding a special sale (15 - 50% off store-wide) for participants from 7:00 - 7:30 pm.

See you tomorrow.

Running Nerds Rejoice!

"The only true way is to marshal the ferocity of your ambition over the course of many days, weeks, months, and (if you could finally come to accept it) years. The Trial of Miles; Miles of Trials"

Entertainment Weekly, of all places, has an interview up with John L. Parker Jr., author of the cult classic, Once a Runner. On April 7th, OAR, commonly referred to as "the runner's bible" (by me, at least) will be re-published after being out of print for years. Hooray!

It is also very exciting to hear that a prequel to OAR is in the works.

If you haven't already read and reread this story - stop what you are doing and go buy it (after you read the rest of this post, I mean).

You still aren't convinced that this is hard hitting news worth getting pumped about? Check out what Slate had to say about this work of genius. Then watch this sweet trailer for a fake movie that some other nerd (not me) made.

Ok - I'm off to go organize my race numbers chronologically. Keep running!

Volvo Wellness Warriors

If you did not already know, Volvo Construction here in Asheville has a phenomenal wellness and fitness program - the Wellness Warriors. Here at Foot Rx, we have a few great connections with this program and we love to see them out in races and events. Foot Rx staffer, Ellen, has played a pivotal in the program - acting as its wellness coordinator from the Reuter YMCA. Ellen is a supreme motivator... just being around her makes me want to bang out push-ups and go for a 10 miler. A few of the warriors themselves are staples on our Wednesday morning group run crew (6 AM @ Reuter YMCA - join us!) and we are lucky to call many more of these Volvo folks loyal customers.

Without further ado, here is a BIG shout out to the Volvo crew who braved the cold wind to put up some great performances at the Knoxville Half Marathon and Marathon.

Back row: Jennifer Culberson, Mona Saranathan, Steve Bratsch (all first-time half marathoners!) and Bill Sauber.
Front row: Todd Gothberg and Chris Clements.

Foot Rx favorite and Wednesday morning group run staple, "Hardcore" Bill Sauber summed up the races well:
Jennifer, Mona, Steve, and Chris all ran the half (Chris’s 2nd half, first for the others). Jennifer ran a 2:12, Mona ran a 2:40, Steve ran a 2:09 and Chris ran a 2:06

Todd and I ran the full marathon. Todd was 4th in his age group (7 seconds from 3rd) at 3:15. I ran a 3:38 for 1st in the Veterans (over 60) division which goes to show if you keep running long enough all your tough competition eventually gives up and lets you get an age group win. I think everyone was shod with FootRx shoes and at least 3 of us wore our FootRx shirts in the race.
Congrats to all who stepped on the line! (Thanks for reppin' Foot Rx!)

*For more info on the Wellness Warriors , check out this excellent article from the Citizen-Times (featuring another Wednesday morning group run regular, Chris Clements).

Until next time - keep logging the miles and staying fit.

Spring!

Spring has arrived and it is glorious! (I am choosing to ignore the cold rain outside...)

With Spring comes blossoming flowers, chirping birds and new arrivals of short sleeve technical tees @ Foot Rx Asheville. I know I am not the only one sick of layering up to brave the elements. Be sure to stop by soon to check out the new gear from some great brands like GoLite, Brooks, Mizuno, Adidas, and Sugoi.

Fresh threads for the guys

Only the finest pieces for the ladies

You want to know what else is so great about the arrival of fresh Springtime swag? The 50% off rack is now stacked with everything that used to be on the walls. There are some serious deals over there... and we aren't talking just winter clothes, either. Right this minute I am looking over at a few Brooks & Mizuno vests - perfect for the unpredictable Spring weather.

Raise your hand if you like saving money!

OK - all this salesman talk is making me feel like I need to take a shower...
