Gorges Road and Trail runs (4.5 mile and 2.5 mile options)
May 19, 2012 – 9:00 am start.
100 runners and walkers will have the chance to take part in the
first-ever organized running events in Gorges State Park.
The 4.5 mile and 2.5 mile runs will be a perfect mix of new
roads and new trails currently under construction. These runs will be an “introduction” of
what’s to come in Gorges future. Western
North Carolina is proud to have Gorges as a significant part of our home and
backyard.
On-line registration at active.com – keyword search Gorges Road
and Trail Run or visit the link - http://www.active.com/running/sapphire-nc/gorges-road-and-trail-run-45-mile-and-25-mile-options-2012
This year is a low-key, inaugural event with very low runner
fees. The 2012 focus is on showcasing Gorges.
FootRX of Asheville is a major supporter and is helping with
race logistics. We plan to grow this event in 2013 with sponsors, supporters
and of course more “frills.”
Runners will be allowed entrance to the park at 8:00 am. Parking will be available at the new White
Pines picnic area where registration and the start/finish for the runs will
take place.
Please consider registering on-line soon to save your
place. There may be a few slots
available race day, but we can’t promise it.
The runs are the kick-off to a larger festival, Gorges Gratitude
Day.
The day will include lots of family fun and something for
everyone. Special presentations on a variety of topics including falconry,
black bears, geology, and local folk lore. There also will be live music,
hayrides and opportunities to meet community organizations instrumental in the
parks development.
There is no entry fee for the actual festival, just a small fee
for the runs. Community organizations
providing food and drink will accept donations for their contributions to
support their missions.
The festival can be reached by taking US 64 to Sapphire and
heading South on NC 281. Upon entering the park follow the signs and parking
attendant instructions to available event parking. The festival starts at 10:00
am and ends at 5:00 PM.
For further information about the festival contact Gorges State
Park at 828-966-9099.
